Chapter 13
After the sheriff stopped taking pictures of the oak tree I'd hit, and stopped drawing projections of my brake marks on Shore Haven Road, and it was no longer the subject of investigation, Cassie drove there. That day after school, sheâd put on an old pair of shorts and a T-shirt, and planned to examine the smashed tree and walk along the black marks on the pavement.
So that afternoon, while Deputy Keely was busy with paperwork, and my parents had their own plans, I went to meet Cassie on Shore Haven Road.
She'd taken a sandwich and a banana with her in the same black metal lunch box she took to school. It reminded me of a mailbox, although it wasn't big enough for that. She refused to use brown paper bags because she said they were a waste of trees. I used to tease her and ask if that was the same box she used when she was in grade school.
She'd just smile, wrinkle her nose, and say, "Wouldn't you like to know?"
When she came to visit the site of my death that afternoon, she pulled up in her hybrid vehicle, slid out of her seat, and turned off the motor and air conditioning. A minute later, her car was already oven-hot from the sun. She walked over to the oak and talked to herself as she did. She said, "This shouldn't have happened to you," and "I miss you so much, Sydney."
She rested against the oak tree and tried to sense what it must have felt like to hit it with an out of control car. She wondered if I'd been in a lot of pain or if I died instantly.
"I miss you too, Cassie." She smiled when she saw me. I put my arms around her and we stood and watched a heron glide down to the sandy surface and walk around, doing a Groucho Marx imitation. We sat in the sun and let it warm us and we watched the oleander flowers blow in the sea breeze. We smelled the fragrant slash pines and listened to the wind whistle through the Australian pines. We dreamt about the time we went shopping together and helped catch a man who was stealing women's underwear, and we smiled about the dance we chaperoned for fifth graders, and how cute they looked dressed up in their minuet costumes.
Just before the sun went down, a car appeared on the horizon. As it came closer, the dimensions of a sheriff vehicle stood out from the background. Cassie's heart started to pound as she recognized the driver.
"It's him. You might as well go ahead and enjoy it. My murder investigation can wait." I didn't tell her my love life could wait, because I didn't think there was a chance it could work out with a mortal, at least not as things were now.
Deputy Keely pulled up in front of us. "Hello." He turned off his engine.
When he spoke to her, her heart tumbled down to the ground.
